In Wales and for Wales
The Offender Management Act 2007 enabled the four former Probation Areas/Trusts in Wales to form the Wales Probation Trust. In addition the act defines the purpose of probation as being:
- The protection of the public
- The reduction of re-offending
- The proper punishment of offenders
- Ensuring offenders awareness of the effects of crime on the victims of crime and the public
- The rehabilitation of offenders.
Many people convicted of offences in Wales serve their sentences in the community and Probation has a statutory obligation to supervise these offenders and ensure they complete their punishment within the timescales set by the courts. We also supervise offenders on release from prison to achieve their effective resettlement into the community.
